Small but power packed; Hungary

The Republic of Hungary is a land locked country with Budapest as its capital. Though relatively small in size, this European nation is rich diverse from its landscape to its culture, making it among the top tourist destinations in the world.

Budapest the capital is rich in historic sites, arts and culture.

Castle Hill or old Buda has at the southern end the Buda Royal Palace built in various styles and guises, since the 14th century. It now houses the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and the National Széchenyi Library.

The Fishermen’s Bastion with the fairytale turrets offering a great view of the city also complements the Mátyás Church.

Visible from all over Budapest is the Gellért Hill peaked by the famous 14-metre Freedom Monument.

The Chain Bridge was the first permanent link between Buda and Pest.

For relaxation and recreation Margaret Island has a sport stadium, numerous tennis courts, outdoor swimming complex, an open air theatre, Japanese and Rose gardens, early medieval ruins, two spa hotels and a beer garden.

The Budapest Parliament House the world’s second largest parliament building with its reflection in the still Danube River are a picture post card setting.

Named after the founder of the Hungarian Christian state, St Stephen’s Basilica with its 315 ft dome is visible from all over Budapest.

The Great synagogue is the second largest in the world and can accommodate up to 3,000 worshippers. There is also The Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Documentation and Memorial Centre here.

Heros’ Square with its many grand statues and the City Park are visitors must see with the Budapest Zoo, the Petőfi Csarnok concert venue and the Széchenyi Baths.

Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe. The 50-mile long lake with silky green-yellow water is one of Hungary’s most precious treasures and most frequented resorts. The shallow waters of the southern shores are ideal for small children. The water and the sleek mud of the lake provide excellent remedies for nervous complaints, anemia and nervous fatigue.

Hévíz is the second largest thermal lake in the world, attracting visitors for more than two centuries. At a temperature of 90°F open-air bathing is very pleasant even in winter. Doctors from the Hospital of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation supervise treatments at the lake for people suffering from the ailments.

Dining &Nightlife: Budapest dazzles with Ruin pubs, Roof deck pubs, bars, lounges, nightclubs and some cool open-air places to give the visitor a mind-blowing night out. A cosmopolitan city, Budapest offers food from anywhere in the world, with most restaurants offering a mixture of Hungarian and international flavors.

There are five international airports serving Budapest of which the Budapest Ferihegy International Airport is the largest and offers all the modern facilities and services.

The major car rental agencies having a desk at the airport are Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.

CLIMATE

Hungary is known to experience a Continental climate with Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The country is characterized by hot summers that are void of humidity. However the season is subject to frequent and heavy showers, especially during the months of May, June and November. Winters are bitterly cold and spring is subject t rainfall

Hungary does not handle any domestic flights as every major city in the country is accessible by train within a few hours of travel. The railways in Hungary are organized by MÁV and GYSEV that operate intercity trains and local trains. The inter city provide connections to and from Budapest to all the major cities in the country. The other options are metros, buses, taxis or by car.
